Warkworth Castle
Situated on the hilltop above the River Coquet Warkworth Castle is one of the largest fortresses in Northumberland. Once famous for having been owned by the Percy Family who now own the famous Alnwick Castle, their lion mark can still be seen today carved throughout the castle remains. The highlight of the castle is its cross-shaped keep which was once home to Harry Hotspur who was a bane of Scottish raiders. The keep which is virtually intact is open for visitors to explore its many rooms including the great hall, chapel and cellars. Occasionally visitors may also be able to view the upper Dukes Rooms that where restored by Algemon Percy in the 1850’s.
