Roman Army Museum

Located next to Waltown Crags, one of the highest sections of Hadrian’s Wall is the Roman Army Museum. The museum houses a range of exhibitions and galleries to immerse visitors into the life of the roman army.

The museums first gallery puts visitors into the role of the army in the Roman Empire. Allowing them to watch the empire expand and contract and discover more about the structure of the army and roles of the types of soldier. Gallery 1 also showcases artefacts such as the only Roman helmet crest ever to be discovered.

Gallery 2 features a main room dedicated to Hadrian’s Wall showcasing displays highlighting the successful invasion and occupation of Britain by the Romans and loads to the 3D film theatre. The 3D film titled “Edge of Empire” takes visitors on an aerial journey alone the wall transporting them back nearly 2000 years to the Roman times.

The final museum gallery provides visitors the opportunity to find out more about Hadrian and his life from boyhood to Emperor and browse the multi-cultural army displays.
