Lindisfarne Castle

Lindisfarne Castle

Seated proudly on top of a volcanic mound and built in the 1550’s Lindisfarne Castle is a grand picturesque historical monument overlooking over Holy Island and afar. In the 1901 the castle became home to Edward Hudson who purchased the castle from the Crown and later during 1902 became transformed by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens into the Edwardian Style country house that can be seen today. Located below the castle is the Walled Garden formally a vegetable garden that was re-designed by Gertrude Jekyll in 1911 a part of the castles conversion plans.

Lindisfarne Castle is situated right next to the edge of the island and the islands Lime Kilns. The Lime Kilns at Castle Point on Holy Island provide an interesting lookback into the industrial past of Holy Island. Both the Lime Kilns and Gertrude Jekyll Walled Garden are free to browse making great additions to any trip to the castle.
