Housesteads Roman Fort Museum

Housesteads Roman Fort

Situated high on a dramatic escarpment on Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads was once the home and workplace of 800 Roman soldiers. The spectacular remains of the fort include the barrack blocks, a hospital, granaries, a commander’s house and old Roman toilets. The fort features some spectacular views such as the view to the east from the north wall of the fort featuring Hadrian’s Wall spanning into the distance along the Northumberland National Park.

The Housesteads Museum located next door to the fort enables visitors to explore life on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire and browse a collation of Romans finds such as dedication stones, altars, jewellery, and tools and weapons.
