Cragside House

Cragside House & Gardens

Known for having been the family home of Lord Armstrong a Victorian inventor and industrialist Cragside is famously known for being the first building in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity.

Cragside is home to extensive outdoor grounds which are the perfect way to keep fit and busy. The grounds feature a large play area, mazes as well as plenty of scenic walks and gardens such as the Formal, Pinetum and Rock Gardens. The Rock Garden is just outside the house and is one of Europe’s largest rock gardens which leads downhill to the Debdon Burn where The Iron Bridge is situated. The Iron Bridge is one of the oldest of its type in the UK and is used to allow crossing of the burn. These carefully landscaped grounds can be explored either by foot or car and is home to millions of trees, shrubs and also the endangered red squirrel which lucky visitors may be able to spot.
